I was pretty sure this would be a good read since it was an Oprah Book Club selection. And I enjoyed it from page one. The main character, Ava Johnson, was sarcastic enough to get my attention.

Returning to your roots usually involves a life-changing journey with many lessons learned along the way. Not only did Ava's experiences change her but some of the characters she met along the way gave her an inner strength she didn't know she possessed. Her sister, Joyce, teaches her about love, compassion, and generosity beyond anything she had ever known.

And then there is Eddie. What woman wouldn't want their own man to be just like her Eddie? I don't think you could find a more gentle, caring, loving man. Ms. Cleage knows the kind of man most women are looking for and she gave him to us in Eddie, a character, despite his dark past, that you just have to love.

Of course, there always has to be the enemy, otherwise the story would be pretty flat if it was all rosy and happy. In Ms. Cleage's novel, the bad element appears in the guise of Gerry, the pastor's wife. But somehow I knew that the truth about her and her 'holier-than-thou' attitude would be found out in the end. It was a typical case of 'pay no attention to the man behind the curtain'.

A good story that kept my interest throughout.
