This collection reminded me, loosely, of my own short story collections. Creative and engaging, you try to figure out the ending of each story but sometimes, reminiscent of Raymond Carver, as Ferris has been compared to, the ending is often a surprise.
Each story tells a different tale, some sad, others a mix of indifference and annoyance at the very human characters that you’ll meet along the way. And like all humans a mix of jealousies and misunderstandings that permeate any long-term relationship where we often give up before knowing for sure that he or she is the right one. Or turning over because you just don’t really want to know – it takes too much time and effort to find out for sure.
Most enjoyable, I’m now looking for his other works to curl up with and compare our twisted storytelling.
I rate “The Dinner Party” 4 out of 5 stars.
